We’ve got to stop governing like this

Measures enacted in 1816 and 1851 -- and still on the books -- mean that Hoosiers:

  • Are subject to the decisions of more than 10,300 local officials.
  • Answer to 3,086 government bodies, many of which can tax.
  • Have more levels of government than all but two of 11 states of similar size.
  • Cannot be guaranteed that they pay fair property taxes.
  • May have unequal school and library services.
  • May be in danger during crises.
  • Spend too many tax dollars that are wasted.

People have been talking about the situation for years. Studies have been conducted. Problems have been documented. But so far, little action has been taken, and Hoosiers haven't been able to pull themselves out from under the burdensome, redundant layers of government.

Here's what is changing: We're doing something about it. We're taking bold action now to streamline government to make it fairer. More consistent. Smarter.
